Plota started as the place to search UK planning applications. It is now a data platform for land and property: planning records from 390 councils, joined to committee decisions, appeals, site constraints, licensing registers and ownership, and checked every day. Anyone can search it free, and teams build it into their own tools through one API. It is trusted by over 100 councils. It has the largest audience of any UK planning or land search.*

Our story
Plota began in 2025 as a data project. We wanted to know what planning applications could tell us about how places were changing: what was proposed, where, and how each application fared.
The records were the obstacle. They sit on 390 council websites, each with its own system, categories, statuses and decision labels, so similar applications are recorded in different ways. Before we could study the trends, we had to build the dataset.
That work became Plota. The public site launched in March 2026 and the company was incorporated that July. Founded by Hector, whose background is in analytics and digital products, Plota is an independent planning-data company based in Hackney.

How we work

Close to the source
We read each council's own planning register and check it again every day. Every application links back to the official record, so you can always see where a fact came from.

Honest about the data
Councils describe the same development in different ways. We sort and order each record but keep the council's wording beside ours, leave a record uncategorised when it is unclear, and publish when we last checked each council.

Free for the public
Search, maps, tracking and alerts are free, because planning affects everyone. The API pays for them: Plota carries no advertising and sells nothing about the people who use it.

Built to be used
The same record serves someone checking their street, a consultant comparing councils and a business watching hundreds of sites. Each of them should find what they need quickly.
