Set up alertsFrequently asked questions
Do farmers need planning permission for new barns?
Agricultural buildings on holdings of 5 hectares or more often qualify for prior approval under Part 6 of the GPDO. Buildings up to 1,000m², at least 25m from a trunk road and reasonably necessary for agriculture can usually proceed via prior approval rather than full planning.
What is an Agricultural Notification (prior approval)?
A prior-approval application notifying the council you intend to build, extend or alter an agricultural building. The council has 28 days to decide whether siting, design or materials warrant a full planning application — they cannot refuse the principle if it qualifies.
