SDNP/26/02880/TCA - Tree in a Conservation Area Application in Progress

Proposal

Tree identification and location One mature magnolia tree located within the rear garden, immediately adjacent to the boundary fence shared with the neighbouring property. The tree is situated at the rear of the property and is screened from Sussex Road. Proposed works Fell the magnolia tree to as close to ground level as reasonably practicable. Remove the trunk, branches, ivy and all associated arisings from the site. The remaining stump will be ground down below ground level to allow the area to be safely and appropriately replanted. Reasons for the proposed works The magnolia has become too large for the restricted position in which it is growing, particularly given its close proximity to the neighbouring boundary. Its size and continued growth are placing pressure on, and causing damage to, the neighbouring fence. The tree also has extensive established ivy growth, which substantially obscures the trunk and natural form of the magnolia, prevents a clear visual inspection of the stem and significantly reduces its ornamental appearance within the garden. The property has recently been purchased and it appears that the tree has received limited maintenance over an extended period. As a result, it is no longer well suited to its location. Pruning alone would not resolve the continuing conflict between the tree?s position, its mature size and the neighbouring boundary. Substantial and repeated pruning would also be likely to adversely affect the natural form and appearance of the magnolia without providing a satisfactory long-term solution. The tree?s location at the rear of the property, out of view from Sussex Road and the public highway, means that its removal would have very limited impact on public amenity or the character and appearance of the conservation area. The proposed removal will prevent further damage to the neighbouring boundary. All works will be carried out by a suitably competent tree contractor. Appropriate checks will be undertaken fo… Data via plota.co.uk

Matters where it crosses or adjoins the site: obstructing a path without a diversion order is an offence, and work cannot start until the order is confirmed.
