26/0027/TCA - Works to trees in a conservation area Approved

Proposal

Tree "T1" in the attached diagram is a Horse Chestnut located at the southern edge of the rear garden. It appears to have been pollarded at about 2m in height but since then it has just been left to grow and is now very overgrown. As part of ongoing garden maintenance, my proposal is to use a combination of crown thinning (by 30%) and crown reduction (to a height of 6m and a spread 4.5m) to restore some shape to the tree. Site constraints 10

Flood zone 2, rivers and sea
Medium chance: between a 1 in 100 and 1 in 1,000 annual chance from rivers, or 1 in 200 to 1 in 1,000 from the sea. Any development here needs a flood risk assessment. Defences are not counted.
The Environment Agency flood map for planning. Homes in zone 3 must also pass the sequential test. Surface water flooding is a separate map.

Rickmansworth Town Centre conservation area
Demolition needs planning permission and permitted development is restricted.
The council must give weight to preserving or enhancing the area's character and appearance. Not every council has published its boundaries as open data.

Local nature reserve about 207 m away: Rickmansworth Aquadrome
Work nearby can need a habitats assessment.
Harm to a protected site is only accepted where there is no alternative and an overriding public interest.
Habitat network: Network Enhancement Zone 2
Where habitat is joined up enough to work as a network. Context, not a constraint on its own.
Also on the record
Radon affected area, class 2; 2 listed buildings within 150 m of the postcode pin; National infrastructure project about 525 m away: Expansion of Heathrow Airport (Third Runway), at pre-application; Inside the Rickmansworth built-up area; Flood defence about 41 m from the postcode pin (natural high ground, designed for a 1 in 50 year flood); Green belt about 50 m away: London.
Not affected
No scheduled monument at the site

Checked on 6 October 2026. The pin for this application is the centre of its postcode rather than the building, so distances to nearby designations are measured from the postcode and can be out by the width of the postcode area. Historic England, the Environment Agency, Natural England, the Planning Inspectorate, the British Geological Survey and UK Health Security Agency (radon, contains BGS materials © UKRI) and council datasets, Open Government Licence. A boundary can run through a site and the council holds the definitive record: confirm with the council before relying on this.
