25/01738/TW - Tree Works (Five Day Notice) Approved

Proposal

**5 Day Notice** T3; Large mature English Oak - Carry out a heavy pollard down to approximately 7-8m in height. Starting to 'grow down' and has recently shed large limbs and stems. Reason: Safety and to ensure the long term amenity use / value and retention of the tree. Note: Works to just remove lower limbs had been started as previously approved, however on climbing the tree many other structural faults were found requiring both immediate works to make safe and a more long term management approach to be taken. Site constraints 8

Nutrient neutrality catchment: Solent: Includes Chichester and Langstone Harbours SPA/Ramsar, Solent and Southampton Water SPA/Ramsar, Solent Maritime SAC, Portsmouth Harbour SPA/Ramsar
New homes and overnight accommodation must show nutrient neutrality before approval.
Natural England advice: extra wastewater in these catchments harms protected habitats, so schemes must offset their nutrient load, usually through credits.
Isle Of Wight National Landscape
Great weight to conserving the landscape; major development restricted.
Previously an area of outstanding natural beauty, which is still the designation in law. Since 2023 authorities must seek to further its purpose, not merely have regard to it.
SSSI 28 m away: Alverstone Marshes SSSI
Natural England may need consulting, depending on what is proposed.
Sites of special scientific interest are the best wildlife and geological sites in the country. Development likely to harm one is rarely permitted.
Habitat network: Network Enhancement Zone 1
Where habitat is joined up enough to work as a network. Context, not a constraint on its own.
Local nature reserve 297 m away: Alverstone Mead
Work nearby can need a habitats assessment.
Harm to a protected site is only accepted where there is no alternative and an overriding public interest.
Also on the record
Inside the Alverstone Garden Village built-up area; Priority habitat 27 m away: Deciduous woodland; Natural England's Provisional ALC map (1:250,000, 1970s) had this area as grade 4, but it predates the buildings here and the current map does not class it as farmland.
Not affected
Outside flood zones 2 and 3 · Not green belt · No listed building at the site

Checked on 6 October 2026. Historic England, the Environment Agency, Natural England and council datasets, Open Government Licence. A boundary can run through a site and the council holds the definitive record: confirm with the council before relying on this.
