Description

Tree Species: Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa) Proposed Works: Pollard to 8 metres Location: South east corner of garden The subject chestnut tree has been under regular monitoring for the past two years. During this period it has exhibited recurrent Sudden Branch Drop (SBD), with several significant branches failing and shedding without warning. Due to the ongoing risk of further branch failure, particularly during periods of high wind, our client wishes to carry out pollarding to secure the tree?s long-term stability and extend its safe lifespan. The tree is located directly on the boundary of a retaining wall supporting several residential properties. This places a number of high-value targets (occupied dwellings and associated structures) within the potential fall zone of large branches. Proposed Management It is proposed to pollard the tree back to a height of approximately 8 metres, removing the majority of the leafy canopy and branch structure. This will reduce the sail area and overall loading on the tree, significantly lowering the risk of future branch drop while allowing the tree to regenerate a new, more compact crown. Pollarding is a recognised technique for managing mature chestnuts showing symptoms of Sudden Branch Drop and is widely accepted as an appropriate method to prolong the safe life of such trees in sensitive urban locations. This work will be carried out by qualified and experienced arborists in accordance with British Standard 3998:2010 (Tree Work ? Recommendations). We believe the proposed pollarding represents the most balanced and responsible approach, ensuring public safety and the retention of the tree as a valuable landscape feature for the future.
