Car port and store at Old Shippon, Gatebeck, Kendal
Summary of planning committee decision
Decided by Westmorland And Furness South Lakeland Local Area Planning Committee on 4 Sept 2025.
What was proposed
The application sought a car port and store for Old Shippon, with a pitched roof, timber cladding, a path and revised parking arrangements.
“Planning Permission is sought for the erection of a car port and store at Old Shippon, Sillfield Farm. The proposal complies with the relevant local and national planning policies. The development is considered to be justified within the open countryside and it would not have an unacceptable impact on the landscape character, residential amenity, highway safety and biodiversity. Consequently, the application is recommended for approval.”
Officer report
The site
Old Shippon is a four-bedroom dwelling within a former farmstead, on an open, sloping site below the highway with woodland beyond.
“Old Shippon is a four bedroom dwelling, previously converted from one of a number of stone buildings on the site. The car port is to be located on a corner parking plot, which is currently allocated to Plot 4. The site is open with sloping field to the east of the M6, accommodating the original, discrete steading at Sillfield Farm. The site is nestled below the level of the highway to the south, with woodland on rising land as backdrop to the north and east.”
Officer report
