Landfill extension and restoration at Weldon Landfill, Weldon
Summary of planning committee decision
Deferred by North Northamptonshire Planning Committee on 17 Jun 2026.
What was proposed
The applicant sought to extend landfill operations by 10 years, allow one year for restoration and update the restoration and aftercare scheme.
“The applicant, WRG (Midlands) Ltd, is applying for planning permission to vary conditions 14 (Operation, Levels and Restoration), 15 (Landscaping) and 22 (End Date) of planning permission ref: 09/00042/WAS to extend the duration of the current waste operations at the landfill site, and to update the approved restoration and aftercare scheme. No other changes are being proposed by the applicant.”
“The current planning consent expired on 28 February 2026, and the applicant is seeking a further extension of 10 years for infilling and 1 year for restoration which would allow the current permitted waste operations to continue with time to restore the site to the restoration plan being proposed as part of this planning application.”
Officer report
The site
The landfill is south of Weldon, accessed from Stamford Road, and surrounded mainly by countryside, farmland, woodland and villages.
“Weldon Landfill Site is located approximately 450 metres to the south of the village of Weldon and approximately 1.7 kilometres to the northeast of the village of Stanion. The landfill site is accessed via Stamford Road which extends along the northwestern boundary of the site. The existing site offices, skip park, weighbridge and recycling area are located near to the site entrance at Stamford Road and are screened from the road by existing vegetation.”
“The land surrounding the landfill site is predominantly rural in nature comprising largely agricultural land, woodland and interspersed with small village settlements. To the north, the land changes to a more industrialised character with several commercial and industrial buildings and other urban features.”
Officer report
Planning history
The site has had permissions for landfill, extensions of time, restoration changes and supporting facilities, with the current permission granted in 2009.
“Planning permission for the infilling of the former quarry with a wide range of wastes was granted in the 1980s although this permission was not implemented. A further permission was granted in 1990. Since then, there have been a number of planning permissions issued for extensions of time, variations of final restoration contours and the installation of various support facilities such as offices and engines to generate electricity from landfill gas.”
“09/00042/WAS Variation of condition 21 of planning permission CO/03/231C and condition 10 of permission CO/05/53C for the extension in time for the landfill, office, skip park, recycling area and associated facilities until 2026 Approved 28 July 2009”
Officer report
Consultation responses
Several consultees had no objection after further information, while ecological advice led to restoration changes and a proposed environmental management condition.
“No objection. Confirmed that the proposed changes to the final restoration profile and the extension of the site’s lifespan will not have any effect on the site’s environmental permit.”
“The LLFA initially advised that there was insufficient information in the application to assess the acceptability of the proposed surface water drainage scheme. Following the submission of further details by the applicant’s agent, the LLFA confirmed that they have no objection to the proposed development.”
