The site and surroundings
The 1.24-hectare site was in an agricultural field beside the Tamnamore substation, with hedgerows, nearby homes and other commercial uses.
“This application site occupies a parcel of land located 500 metres Morth East of 32 Drumkee Road, Coalisland. It sits immediately North of the existing NIE/SONI Tamnamore Substation which accesses onto the Drumkee Road. Adjacent and to the south of the site is a battery storage facility which was granted permission in October 2018.”
“The surrounding agricultural land is traversed by the busy A45 Ballynakilly Road which connects Coalisland to the M1 motorway. There are some dispersed dwellings throughout the landscape and a variety of commercial landuses such as car sales, joinery, tourist accommodation and filling station close by, as well as some engineering enterprises.”

What members discussed
Members asked about battery safety, fire-service involvement, cumulative effects, noise and the relationship between the proposal and future substation development.
“[name withheld] (PPO) advised that officers had consulted with the Fire & Rescue Service in consideration of the planning application as they have an instrumental part in the overall determination of the proposal.”
“Councillor Molloy stated that he had joined the meeting out of curiosity to see where this was going as there had been a dispute between the two providers that was on that site. SONI is the inter-connector for the powerlines and battery storage, but there were a number of these battery storage facilities that were planned for the major area around this.”
