Business direction sign at Footpath Sedlescombe 16A, Sedlescombe
Summary of planning committee decision
Decided by Rother Planning Committee on 9 Oct 2025.
What was proposed
The application concerned signage described as modest, non-illuminated and designed with timber, white text and a green background.
“The advertisement is considered to be relatively modest in size, non- illuminated and the colour palette of timber with white text on a green background, is inspired by the landscapes of the Sussex Winelands vineyards and are not considered intrusive or garish.”
“The signage design and size follow the advice given as part of the Council's pre-application advice.”
Officer report
The site and surroundings
The sign would be in the countryside within the High Weald AONB, beside a hedge and near road access points.
“Having regard to the location within the countryside of the High Weald AONB, the sign would be an aid to support local business which is important in maintaining the living countryside. The signage is easily visible to both those on foot and in vehicles but discreetly located against the hedgerow.”
“The sign displayed will be set back from the road adjacent to the hedge and would be relatively simple with no proposed distracting flashing or illumination to the signage. The sign does not block the adjacent access into the Sawmills. Set against the hedge, the sign would not obscure visibility at this junction. There is a separate vehicle access into Sedlescombe Vineyard further to the north.”
Officer report
