Alpaca field shelter at Field east of Jenners Lane, Hastings

Summary of planning committee decision

Decided by Hastings Planning Committee on 10 Jun 2026.

HS/FA/26/00097Approved

What was proposed

Permission was sought for a three-sided, timber-clad alpaca shelter measuring 23.8 square metres and 2.8 metres high.

“The field is located to the east of Jenners Lane, (an unmade track off Winchelsea Lane), opposite Dingle Cottage. The field is enclosed by timber and wire stock fencing with timber gates. There is substantial tree and thicket cover all around the perimeter of the field. There is an existing field shelter in the northwest corner of the field, and a storage shed on the western boundary of the field, both associated with the use of the field for grazing Alpacas.”

“The shelter would be enclosed on three sides, with timber cladding and a corrugated roof, and sat on timber sleepers to avoid the need for foundations. It would have a hipped roof with gables on either side, and an overhang across the front elevation. It would have a footprint of 23.8sqm (7m x 3.4m) and would be 2.8m at the highest point of the roof ridge.”

Officer report

Committee debate

Members discussed whether winter thinning of the hedging could make the shelter more visible from Jenners Lane.

“Councillor Marlow-Eastwood sought clarification of whether the proposal would be visible from Jenners Lane. [name withheld] advised that whilst there would be limited views of the proposal, as dense thicket hedging obscured the view, other than from glimpsed sightings from the field gates.”

“Members debated the proposal. Councillor Marlow-Eastwood was concerned that the hedging could become thinner during the winter months, making the proposal more visible from the lane. Councillor Warne countered that she was familiar with the lane and had observed that the trees and hedging obscured the view, which was in keeping with the area.”
