Hospital building phase at Main Hospital Building (Phase 6C) Springfield Hospital, London SW17

Summary of planning committee decision

Decided by Wandsworth Planning Applications Committee on 25 Sept 2025.

2024/3677Refused

No officer report was published for this decision; this summary is from the committee minutes.

The site's planning history

The site already had planning permission for development, which would remain valid if this application were refused.

“The Senior Planning Officer explained the relevant planning history to the site and background to the applications. It was noted that the site had existing planning permission for development, which would continue to be valid should permission for the application before the Committee be refused. The applicant had indicated to officers that they were intending to appeal a decision to refuse the application. Officers were confident that they could defend any such appeal.”

Minutes

Progress on other phases

Officers confirmed that two other phases of the wider development had started, while this phase had not.

“In response to a query regarding the status of other phases of development across the wider site, officers confirmed that phases 6A and 6B had commended. Although work had not commended regarding the application before Committee, phase 6C.”

Minutes

Questions on a possible appeal

Members asked about the likely timescale for an appeal, and officers said this was difficult to predict.

“In response to a question from members regarding likely timescales for an appeal, officers advised that it was difficult to give timescales. It would be dependent on the Planning Inspectorate’s workload and the mode of appeal.”

Minutes

Decision

The committee voted 5 to 4 to refuse the application for the reasons set out in the report.

“RESOLVED – (5 votes for refusal, to 4 against) that planning permission be refused for the reasons set out in the report, noting the additional information as set out in the late items of correspondence paper.”

Minutes

The members' reasons

“Some Members felt that it might be appropriate to grant Planning Permission, as it would secure a £700k contribution to affordable housing provision whilst greenlighting the delivery of much needed homes within the Borough.”
