PA26/2186 - Works to Tree/s in Conservation Area Approved

Proposal

Proposed works: Fell one ~8.0m tall mature apple tree (Malus domestica) located in the rear garden (tree #1 on sketch plan), including removal of the stump by stump grinding to below ground level to facilitate replanting. The tree will be replaced during the first available planting season with a 1.5–2.0m tall Magnolia Soulangeana or Galaxy. Reason for works: The tree is a mature, overgrown fruit tree with a declining structure and limited long-term amenity value. It has become disproportionately large for the size of the garden, resulting in excessive shading of the rear garden and adjacent windows. Significant annual fruit drop and decay creates ongoing maintenance issues and a trip and slip hazard. The tree also exhibits signs consistent with age-related decline, including areas of deadwood and stem defects. Having considered alternative management options, removal is considered the most appropriate long-term solution. To maintain the contribution of tree cover within the Conservation Area, the tree will be replaced with a 1.5–2.0m tall Magnolia Galaxy which will provide an attractive flowering specimen better suited to the scale and character of the garden while continuing to contribute positively to the Conservation Area.
