Proposal

Addition of fibre optic cable at Strangers' Hall museum. The cable will follow the route of existing cables and will predominantly use the same apertures and fixings. Where this isn't the case, the existing cable will be removed and the new cable sited in the same place. The sheath will be exterior grade black cable. There will be clips into mortar joints by drilling a 5mm hole, the possibility of a new hole needed to be drilled in the floorboards from the Porter's Lodge up to the storage heater in the Great Hall if the current aperture is too small, and the drilling of a 10mm hole in a doorframe through to the offices, which is of low historic importance; roughly one hundred years old and very common. Nearest: Strangers Hall Museum, Grade I, about 12 m from the postcode pin · 3 Grade I, 4 Grade II*, 46 Grade II
The site itself is not listed. Listed building consent is needed for work that affects the special interest of a listed building, inside or out, on top of planning permission. Setting can be a consideration for buildings nearby; there is no fixed radius.

Historic England ↗
Nutrient neutrality catchment: Yare Broads and Marshes
New homes and overnight accommodation must show nutrient neutrality before approval.
Natural England advice: extra wastewater in these catchments harms protected habitats, so schemes must offset their nutrient load, usually through credits.
City Centre conservation area
Demolition needs planning permission and permitted development is restricted.
The council must give weight to preserving or enhancing the area's character and appearance. Not every council has published its boundaries as open data.
Air quality management area: Central Norwich AQMA
The council has declared the area as failing an air quality objective.
Schemes that add traffic, parking or combustion plant are assessed against the area's action plan and may need an air quality assessment.

Checked on 2 November 2026. The pin for this application is the centre of its postcode rather than the building, so distances to nearby designations are measured from the postcode and can be out by the width of the postcode area. Historic England, the Environment Agency, Natural England and council datasets, Open Government Licence. A boundary can run through a site and the council holds the definitive record: confirm with the council before relying on this.
