Proposal
Removal of four Ilex aquifolium (Common Holly), stump grinding, and replacement with a native pleached Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam) hedge. The proposal will improve the appearance, functionality and long-term landscape contribution of the frontage while preserving and enhancing the character of the Conservation Area. The four existing holly trees are small specimens of limited arboricultural and amenity value. They display poor form, including irregular crowns, uneven growth and sparse foliage, resulting in a weak and unmanaged appearance. As such, they make only a minor contribution to the streetscape and do not form part of a significant landscape feature, historic planting scheme or important tree group. The proposal represents a clear enhancement rather than a loss of tree cover. The hollies will be replaced with a formally managed pleached hornbeam hedge. Hornbeam is a native species widely used in historic landscapes and Conservation Areas due to its longevity, strong visual structure and excellent tolerance of pruning. The replacement planting will provide a more cohesive and sustainable landscape feature, delivering greater visual amenity, improved frontage screening and a stronger contribution to the character and appearance of the Conservation Area.
