Proposal

We wish to prune a large Silver Birch in the corner of our rear garden (T1). Following a meeting with a tree surgeon we have been advised to prune/reduce the canopy by 1-2m. The tree surgeon will also shape the remaining canopy and remove any dead wood. We have spoken to our neighbours at Bramley Tree Barn (property directly behind ours and the Silver Birch branches hang over their patio) and they are happy with the plans. The partial reduction proposed will be useful in preventing the branches contacting the property - and useful in preventing branches/leaves falling onto their patio. Data via plota.co.uk

Site constraints 6

North Wessex Downs National Landscape
Great weight to conserving the landscape; major development restricted.
Previously an area of outstanding natural beauty, which is still the designation in law. Since 2023 authorities must seek to further its purpose, not merely have regard to it.
West Hendred Conservation Area conservation area
Demolition needs planning permission and permitted development is restricted.
The council must give weight to preserving or enhancing the area's character and appearance. Not every council has published its boundaries as open data.
Habitat network: Network Enhancement Zone 1
Where habitat is joined up enough to work as a network. Context, not a constraint on its own.
6 listed buildings within 150 m of the postcode pin
Nearest: Yew Tree Cottage, Grade II, about 53 m from the postcode pin · 6 Grade II
The site itself is not listed. Listed building consent is needed for work that affects the special interest of a listed building, inside or out, on top of planning permission. Setting can be a consideration for buildings nearby; there is no fixed radius.

Also on the record
Inside the West Hendred built-up area; Natural England's Provisional ALC map (1:250,000, 1970s) had this area as grade 2, but it predates the buildings here and the current map does not class it as farmland.
Not affected
Outside flood zones 2 and 3 · Not green belt · No scheduled monument at the site

Checked on 6 October 2026. The pin for this application is the centre of its postcode rather than the building, so distances to nearby designations are measured from the postcode and can be out by the width of the postcode area. Historic England, the Environment Agency, Natural England and council datasets, Open Government Licence. A boundary can run through a site and the council holds the definitive record: confirm with the council before relying on this.
