SDNP/26/03981/TPO - Tree Preservation Order Application in Progress

Proposal

T1 - Birch: Fell to ground level. Specimen is spindly due to dense competition. Removal will relieve localized overcrowding and promote crown development of adjacent retained trees. T2 - Birch: Fell to ground level. The tree is almost entirely dead, with barely any life left in it, and is leaning over and rubbing against the nearby Holm Oak T3 - Ash: Fell to ground level. This tree is also thin and weak from being cramped in. Taking it out helps thin out the overcrowded area so the better trees can thrive. T4-T7 Holm Oak (x4): Fell to ground level. These four trees are poor quality and growing way too close together. Removing them opens up more light and gives the remaining healthy trees the space they need to spread out and grow properly. T8 - Ash: Fell to ground level. The tree is dying back and losing its health. It needs to come down for safety reasons before it becomes a hazard. T9 - Ash: Fell to ground level. This tree is also suffering from heavy dieback and losing its strength. It needs to be removed for safety. G1 - Mixed species tree line along the front road boundary: Crown lift all overhanging branches to achieve a clearance height of 5.2 metres above the road. To provide clear headroom for passing traffic, prevent damage to vehicles, and ensure the roadside trees comply with Highways standards for road safety. T10 - Atlas Cedar: Remove the two lowest overextended limbs and crown lift the remaining low branches over the hedge to leave a 2-foot gap above the hedge line. The lowest branches are hanging at head height, making it unsafe to walk around or mow the lawn underneath. Removing these two low branches and tidying up the ones over the hedge removes the hazard, allows safe access for routine garden maintenance, and rebalances the tree's shape. Data via plota.co.uk

Site constraints 10

South Downs National Park
The park authority decides applications here. Great weight to conserving the landscape; major development restricted.
Landscape, scenic beauty and wildlife carry great weight, and major development is only allowed in exceptional circumstances.
National nature reserve 194 m away: Seven Sisters
Work nearby can need a habitats assessment.
Harm to a protected site is only accepted where there is no alternative and an overriding public interest.
Habitat network: Network Enhancement Zone 1
Where habitat is joined up enough to work as a network. Context, not a constraint on its own.
Radon affected area, class 5
An estimated 10 to 30% of homes reach the radon action level. Indicative for the 1 km square, which takes the highest class found in it; a radon test gives the answer for a building.
From the British Geological Survey and UK Health Security Agency indicative atlas. Under building regulations, as the BRE guide BR 211 (2023) sets out, new buildings and extensions need basic radon protection from class 3 in England and Wales and from class 2 in Scotland, and full protection from class 5. The class at the site itself, from the detailed BGS map, decides which.

Not affected
Outside flood zones 2 and 3 · Not green belt · No listed building at the site
