Building name sign at Town Hall Place, Market Street, Tamworth
Summary of planning committee decision
Decided by Tamworth Planning Committee on 2 Dec 2025.
The site and surroundings
The sign would be fixed to the western elevation of newly constructed Town Hall Place in the town centre conservation area.
“The site is located within the designated Tamworth Town Centre and is within the Tamworth Town Centre Conservation Area. There are a number of nearby listed buildings, including the Grade II* listed Town Hall and Grade II listed Building Society (22 Market Street). The surrouding area is predominantly commerical, with some upper floor residential units.”
“The proposal is for a non-illuminated wall mounted sign measuring 1.4m by 1.4m. The sign would be sited on the western elevation of the building, 5.4m above ground level. The sign would project 0.05m from the elevation and would be non-illumianted. The sign would be constructed of powder coated alluminium coloured dark blue (RAL 5013), with acylic letters and artwork, coloured white and gold. The sign would show the Town Hall Place branding.”
Officer report
Earlier site history
Earlier permission approved redevelopment for a flexible multi-use building, while a later application to vary approved plans remained under consideration.
“0139/2025 - Variation of condition 2 (approved plans) of application 0414/2022 – Pending consideration…”
Officer report
Officers’ assessment
Officers considered the sign appropriately designed, non-dominant and safe, preserving the conservation area and nearby listed buildings’ settings.
“The proposed sign is considered to be well designed, suitable for the building and located with the town centre. The sign would be non-illuminated and as such would not result in glare. The sign would be sited in an appropriate location which would alert passes by to the identity of the building, whilst not being over dominant within the street scene.”
“The design and scale of the advert are considered to be appropriate given the surrounding heritage assets. The Council’s Conservation Officer has raised no objections and advised that the advert would not impact upon heritage assets. The proposal is therefore considered to preserve the character and appearance of the Tamworth Town Conservation Area and the setting of nearby listed buildings.”
Officer report
Consultation and objections
The conservation officer raised no objection, and no letters of representation were received after adjacent properties were notified and a site notice posted.
“Tamworth Borough Council Conservation Officer (28/10/2025): No objection. The sign is appropriately positioned, scaled and visually acceptable in terms of imaging, font and colours. The proposal would preserve the character and appearance, and thus significance of the Tamworth Town Conservation Area. The proposal would be a neutral presence within the setting of nearby listed buildings, thus having no adverse impact upon their significance.”
“As part of the consultation process adjacent properties were notified and a site notice was posted on 24/10/2025. No letters of representation have been received.”
