Gateway structures at Railway Approach, Newhaven

Summary of planning committee decision

Decided by Lewes District Council Planning Applications Committee on 7 Jan 2026.

LW/25/0599Approved

What was proposed

Gateway structures would identify transport routes and public amenities, replace bus shelters, improve pedestrian routes and provide soft lighting.

“4 Development Proposed 4.1 The application seeks permission for the erection of a series of gateway features along Railway Approach and The Drove. These features would be used to provide better definition to important pedestrian routes, including access to platforms at Newhaven Town Station, access to the ferry terminal and The Sidings, to improve bus infrastructure and, in the case of the Marine Workshops gateway, frame a view over the River Ouse.”

“The proposed gateway at the entrances to the ferry terminal, Sidings and Marine Workshops would also take the form of a cross section mounted on 2.6 metre high concrete columns with the section comprising a steel lattice gantry, steel frameworks with stell netting and concrete/brick archway respectively. The gap between the columns would be approx. 2.6 metres at the ferry terminal access and 2.85 metres at The Sidings and Marine Workshops.”
