Two farm storage buildings at Land at Longsleddale, Kendal

Summary of planning committee decision

Decided by Lake District Development Control Committee on 4 Mar 2026.

7/2025/5167Approved

What was proposed

Two agricultural buildings would provide lambing and storage, with excavation, banking and a widened gateway for farm access.

“It is proposed to construct two agricultural buildings on concrete bases in an agricultural field in Longsleddale. The buildings would be used for lambing and storage of agricultural machinery, animal foodstuffs, straw etc.”

“Excavation and banking would be required to create a flat area on which to locate the buildings. It is also proposed to widen the existing gated access onto the public road.”

Officer report

The site and farming operation

The site is an agricultural field within 12.5 hectares farmed by the applicant, supporting 50 ewes and 40 to 80 lambs.

“The applicant owns a flock of 50 ewes which produce between 40-80 lambs, and farms 12.5 hectares of agricultural land including the application site which is in the applicant’s ownership. There is no farmstead associated with this agricultural land. The applicant’s agent has explained that the proposed buildings are required because the applicant has recently lost some tenanted buildings located elsewhere in the valley.”

Objections received

Fourteen objections raised concerns about highway safety, landscape, neighbours’ amenity, drainage, lighting, the public right of way and the proposed activity.

“The proposed access is located on a busy part of the road at the beginning of the valley and the access is bad with low visibility. The proposed development would increase the use of the access and cause further highway safety harm. • The proposed buildings on a concrete base would cause harm to the visual character of the local area, National Park and World Heritage Site. • The proposed development would be out of keeping of the area, especially when viewed from the PROW.”

“The proposed development on a concrete slab would cause surface water flood risk to nearby neighbouring properties, contrary to Local Plan Policy 03. • The proposed amendment to the access would cross the Public Right of Way. This PROW is an ancient lane, possibly Bronze Age, known as ‘Stoney Lane’. • The applicant owns other land which would be more suitable for the proposed development. Access could also be sought from the A6 which would be more suitable.”
