Sports facilities containers at Playing Field adjacent to Yeading Junior School, Hayes
Summary of planning committee decision
Decided by Hillingdon Planning Committee on 17 Jul 2025.
What was proposed
The application sought two sports and recreation containers providing changing rooms, toilets, showers, drying facilities and equipment storage.
“Planning permission is sought for the placement of two sports/recreation related containers/structures on playing field grounds, and all associated works.”
“The buildings have already been purchased and are waiting in storage. In terms of size, they would be approximately 2.6m high, 2.5m deep and 12m wide (each). In terms of location, t hey would be sited upon a concrete base, which would be positioned on a parcel of playing field that the applicant advises is currently underutilised .”
Officer report
Why officers supported it
Officers considered the facilities would improve physical education and field use, with no unacceptable effects on appearance, neighbours, trees or highways.
“The provision of the sports containers would improve the school’s ability to deliver physical education, by providing equipment storage and sanitation facilities directly on the field where they are needed. Drying facilities will ensure equipment is ready for use more quickly, increasing its availability for students .”
“Furthermore, due to their limited height, location behind a bank of trees (within a field ), purpose of serving an existing school, and significant separation distance from neighbours and public vantage points, the proposed structures would have no adverse impact on the character and appearance of the area, neighbouring amenities or the local highways network.”
Officer report

“No objection, subject to a condition requiring step free access.”
Officer report
What members discussed
Members asked about the containers’ colour and security, and officers explained that locks, fencing and hedging would help protect the site.
“Members enquired whether the colour of the containers could be conditioned to blend better with the landscape. It was agreed that the wording for this condition would be delegated to officers in consultation with the Chair.”
“Members observed that the remote location of the structures could lend itself to antisocial behaviour and enquired whether any security measures were proposed to mitigate this. Officers confirmed that the proposed siting would facilitate access for the students and ensure they did not need to carry equipment too far from the main building. The containers would be locked and there would be a security perimeter fence and dense hedging around the site.”
