Summary of planning committee decision

Decided by Edinburgh Development Management Sub-Committee on 10 Jun 2026.

25/03979/FULApproved

The site and surroundings

The site is cricket greenspace within George Watson’s College grounds, bordered by trees and near conservation areas, a safeguarded route, the Union Canal, and homes.

“The site is mainly greenspace that is used as cricket grounds bordered by trees forming part of George Watsons College. To the south of the site is a Cricket pavilion, other buildings associated with the school and a car park.”

“The cricket grounds are designated Open Space in the Local Development Plan. To the far north is Merchiston and Greenhill Conservation Area whilst Craiglockhart Hills Conservation Area is south. Part of the latter is also covered by a Special Landscape Area and Local Nature Conservation Site. An Active Travel Safeguard route 'ATSG14' - Morningside - Union Canal link, borders the site to the west with a disused railway line beyond this. The Union Canal is also to the far west.”

What officers recommended

Officers recommended approval because the proposal complied with the development plan and supported local recreation while protecting landscape, ecology, transport, and neighbouring amenity.

“Overall, the proposal complies with the Development Plan as it is in accordance with the LDP and NPF 4.”

“The sports pitches would provide a recreational facility in proximity to homes therefore supporting principles of local living. The change to the open space character is acceptable and appropriate sports provision would be retained. Detailed landscape plans would provide appropriate mitigation for the loss of greenspace helping support ecological enhancement and the wider green / blue network.”
