Bungalow extension with dormers at 5 Chalewood Road, Langley, Fawley
Summary of planning committee decision
Decided by New Forest District Planning Committee on 14 Oct 2026.
The site and its surroundings
The site is a detached bungalow on a corner plot in an established residential road with mostly low-profile bungalows and chalet bungalows.
“The bungalow has a projecting front gable which connects to a linear form with side facing gables, and has been previously extended to the side and rear. The rear extension is a flat roofed structure off part of the rear elevation. A detached garage is positioned to the rear of the dwelling, adjacent to the boundary with 4 Chalewood Road. The property has a reasonable sized rear garden enclosed by fencing and backs on to dwellings on St. Francis Road.”
Officer report
Earlier extensions
The dwelling had earlier permissions for a single-storey rear extension and an additional ground-floor bedroom, and had already been extended to the side and rear.

Officer report
Why officers recommended refusal
Officers considered the proposed height, scale, mass and large dormers would create a bulky, prominent and contextually inappropriate addition harming the street scene and area character.
“The overall height of the rear extension would be approximately 6m, an increase of 1.2m above the height of the existing ridge line and this would result in the development being highly visible and prominent within the street frontage.”
“Furthermore, the proposed development would be contrary to Policy ENV3 of the Local Plan Part 1 as the proposed development would not achieve high quality design that contributes positively to local distinctiveness and the character and identity of the locality, and in accordance with Policy DP3, paragraph 3, the application should therefore be refused. The recommendation is therefore one of refusal for the reasons set out above.”
