Description
The tree is a single variegated japanese maple (acer palmatum), situated within a raised planting bed on the front left-hand side of the driveway. It is a relatively young specimen that was planted by the previous owner. The main trunk measures approximately 80mm in diameter. Above 1.5 metres, no branch exceeds 75mm in diameter, with most branches measuring between 20mm and 50mm. The first significant stem is at approximately 1.5 metres and measures around 40mm in diameter. An arborist who has inspected the tree advised that it sits only marginally above the exemption threshold. Reason for proposed removal I am seeking consent to remove the tree as part of a wider redesign and replanting of the front garden and driveway area. Whilst I appreciate the tree's ornamental qualities, its current position within the raised bed creates practical challenges. The combination of the tree and the elevated planting area restricts visibility for both pedestrians and vehicles approaching along Vineyard Hill. This is particularly challenging because I am very short-sighted, meaning that clear sightlines are especially important when entering and leaving the property. Improving visibility would enhance safety for vehicles accessing the driveway as well as for pedestrians using the pavement. In addition, I understand that drainage infrastructure runs beneath the raised bed. It is believed that issues may have arisen following the original planting of the tree, and there is evidence of wider problems within the bed, including the loss of surrounding shrubs and planting. Further investigation and any necessary remedial works to the drainage system will require excavation of the area, making retention of the tree difficult. The proposed works are therefore intended not simply to remove the tree, but to facilitate a comprehensive improvement of the frontage, including enhanced access, improved visibility and the renewal of the planting scheme.
