Description

I live in the Alexandra Park Conservation Area in Edgeley, toward the western end. We have a tree in the rear garden that I wish to cut down and remove entirely including stump and roots. I understand it is a 'Goat Willow' and self-seeded likely from bird droppings. It has grown quickly over the last 7 years or so, from a sapling to a specimen around 8m tall and a spread around 5m. Its size now is such that it covers the bottom half of the garden almost entirely from sunlight, leaving the previous lawn just an area of mud broken by its own substantial roots protruding through the surface. I feel that trimming back the tree would be only a temporary measure as its growth is rapid, and the roots are as much a problem to the lawn as the lack of sunlight. My understanding is that this tree is not a notable species, and being in the rear garden and being a relatively new tree, does not contribute significantly to the character of the conservation area, and indeed, is now detrimental to this dwelling's, and the adjacent property's, rear gardens.
