Application for a Scoping Opinion under Part 2, Chapter 14 of the Town and Country Planning (Environmental Impact Assessment) (Wales) Regulations 2017 for the terrestrial elements of the project known as Western Link 2, a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) subsea electricity cable between Ayrshire and Gwynedd. The terrestrial elements of the proposed project would comprise: a new landfall at Caernarfon Bay, Gwynedd, incorporating a Transition Joint Bay (TJB) connecting the offshore HVDC cable to the onshore HVDC cable; approximately 25 km of underground HVDC cable from landfall to a new converter station near the existing Pentir substation in Gwynedd; a new converter station in proximity to the existing Pentir substation; a short section of underground high voltage alternating current (HVAC) cable connecting the converter station to Pentir substation; an extension to the existing Pentir substation to facilitate the connection into the NETS; and potential modifications to existing overhead line infrastructure in the vicinity of Pentir substation.
